Agribusiness Company Cargill has introduced a high-oleic sunflower version of IngreVita EPA/DHA omega-3 oil, allowing food manufacturers to include long-chain omega-3s (EPA and DHA) in their products.
EPA and DHA are long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids that play a significant role in heart health and brain development.
The new product is manufactured from identify-preserved (IdP) conventionally-bred (non-GMO) high oleic sunflower seeds, fish oil and proprietary antioxidants.
Cargill Specialty Seeds and Oils marketing manager Kristine Sanschagrin said: "Helping our customers succeed by providing them choices for ingredients is what drove the development of IngreVita HO Sun.
"Some of our customers choose to offer consumers non-GMO products and this is one such option for those customers".
In 2014, Cargill launched the original IngreVita that contains canola oil. IngreVita High Oleic Sunflower and EPA/DHA Omega-3 Oil (IngreVita HO Sun) is the second IngreVita product from Cargill.
According to Cargill, the average consumption of EPA and DHA in the US is below the American Heart Association's recommendation of 250-500 mg per day from fish.
Cargill believes the increased consumption of EPA and DHA through functional foods is expected to meet the required margin in order to support health and wellness.
