Audi Will Showcase Its Matrix OLED Lighting Technology at International Motor Show

Luxury automobile manufacturer Audi will showcase its Matrix OLED lighting technology at International Motor Show in Frankfurt, Germany, in September.

Claiming to display a lighting homogeneity and being light-weight and efficient, Matrix OLED lights are developed under projects for tail lights.

Audi said in a statement: "Progress in OLED technology is being made rapidly - in part due to the driving force of Audi. As soon as further increases in light density are realized, OLEDs will soon be able to generate turn signal and brake lights too."

Stated to be an English acronym for 'organic light emitting diode', the lighting system features two electrodes, one of which is transparent, encompassing thin layers of organic semiconductor materials.

This is in contrast with point light sources, including LEDs, consisting of semiconductor crystals.

OLEDs are flat light sources offering homogeneity, whose lights do not cast any shadows and do away with reflectors, light guides or similar optical components. Besides, the OLEDs do not require any cooling.

A low DC voltage, hovering between three and four volts, is capable of activating the layers with thickness less than one-thousandth of a millimeter for emitting light. The color of the light is determined by the molecular composition of the light source.

OLEDs are also capable of being subdivided into small segments for operating at different brightness levels, with fast switchover times. The illuminated sub-surfaces also show very precise boundaries with one another.
