Subaru, the automobile manufacturing division of Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI), is planning to recall 5,400 vehicles in the US, due to a problem with the steering.
The recall affects 2013 model year Outback sedan and the Legacy vehicles that were manufactured from 15 February 2012 to 15 June 2012.
According to the report filed with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the inner and outer shafts of the steering column assembly could lose connection with each other leading to loss of the control of the steering.
The company discovered the problem in June 2012, following which it stopped selling and shipping the specific vehicles in order to carry out inspection and repair, if necessary.
Under the recall, the dealers will replace the defective steering assembly with a new unit free of charge.
