Canada, Ireland and France Have Received Excellent Grades for Food Safety Performances

Canada, Ireland and France have received excellent grades for their food safety performances in the current year, reveals a report by World Ranking Food Safety and Performance Report 2014.

Prepared by The Conference Board of Canada's Centre for Food in Canada in collaboration with University of Guelph's food institute, the report offers an overall world ranking of food safety performance for 17 Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries.

It ranks countries through 10 indicators organised across three food safety risk governance domains such as assessment, management, and communication.

Canada has topped the list, followed by Ireland and France.

Senior research associate and lead author of the report Dr. Jean-Charles Le Vallée said: "Canada's excellent grades in most food safety performance metrics were due to its consistently low number of food-borne illness cases and reported recalls, Canada's new policy on allergen labeling, and a greater focus on transparency."

Although 67% of Canadians feel that their food is safer than it was five years ago, they believe there is much work to be done on improving perfrmance through frequent reporting.

Countries like Netherlands and Switzerland were also placed on top in the ranking.
