Austin, Texas – Samsung launched Monday its Chromebook 2 series.
The two Chromebooks will ship in April and include 11.6-inch ($319 suggested retail) and 13.3-inch configurations ($399). Both feature improved performance, longer battery life and a slim, light build.
Both Chromebooks also feature enhanced durable textured lids with a stitched design. Battery life for both models is listed up to 8.5 hours per charge.
Each unit includes 4GB of DDR3L 1,600MHz system memory and 16GB of e.MMC iNAND embedded flash memory for storage. Webcams with 720p HD resolution are also built-in with each device.
The 13.3-inch model adds a FullHD 1080p resolution screen and 250-nit brightness, and enhanced audio quality with a pair of 2-watt speakers and a noise-reducing array microphone.
Samsung was the leading Chromebook brand in the U.S. in 2013, accounting for more than 60 percent of overall market share, according to research quoted from The NPD Group.
“Since we introduced our first Chromebook in 2011, Samsung has been committed to continually developing our designs and features to meet our users’ ever-changing needs, while staying true to the core Chromebook attributes of simplicity, speed and security,” said Mike Abary, Samsung consumer IT product marketing senior VP. “Samsung has been the top-selling consumer Chromebook brand for the past three years, and we’ll continue to grow our leadership position in this space with the launch of the Chromebook 2 series.”
The models were designed for rapid start times, longer battery life and an easy-to-grip design.
Samsung uses its energy-efficient Exynos 5 Octa processors to enable multitasking and rapid rendering of graphics and videos.
The Chromebook 2 models ship with a package of premium apps worth more than $100, and include smartphone access and data management service Air Droid Premium, task management and collaboration app Wunderlist Pro, and LittleBridge.com, an English learning app.
