Audio in Samsung's Galaxy S III Is Provided by a Chip From Edinburgh-Based Wolfson

Audio in Samsung's Galaxy S III is provided by a chip from Edinburgh-based Wolfson.

The device is the WM1811'audio hub',and the design-in follows Samsung's use of the earlier WM8994 in the Wave and Galaxy S.

Wolfson's audio hubs mop up all or most of the audio functions in a phone, providing analogue functions like microphone, speaker and headset interfaces,as well as off-loading digital audio processing from the phone's application processor, and providing some power supply functions.

In the WM1811 case, the speaker driver is a 2x2W stereo class D amplifier, and on-chip digital processing includes:stereo full duplex asynchronous sample rate conversion,multi-channel digital mixing(plus analogue mixing)and a programmable parametric equalisation.

Playback signal to noise ratio is claimed to be 100dB(A weighted)during DAC playback.
