Intel Unveils Atom Z2760 for Windows 8 Tablets

Intel has unveiled its chip focused on tablet systems, the Atom Z2760,revealing it'll launch after Windows 8 becomes available next month.

Formerly known as Clover Trail, the system-on-a-chip design of the Intel Atom Z2760 is said to offer longer battery life and always-on technology.Details of the new system were leaked in August.

"This is just the beginning of Intel's effort in the tablet market, and our goal is to deliver products that fit the spectrum of evolving needs of both consumers and business users without compromising on compatibility, experience or battery life,"said Erik Reid, general manager,Application Processor Platforms for Intel's Mobile and Communications Group.

The chip will be able to run up to 1.8GHz at maximum performance for short periods of time.Intel claims the Atom Z2760 allows tablets to be as thin as 8.5mm and as light as 1.5 pounds, making them easier to transport than current designs already are.

It also boasts Intel hyper-threading technology, allowing tablets to run multiple applications simultaneously.

The new processor has been built specially with Windows 8 in mind and will feature in tablets by Acer,Asus,Dell,Fujitsu,HP,Lenovo,LG,Samsung and ZTE.Windows 8 itself is scheduled for launch on 26 October.
