New Taipei has adopted a PFI (private finance initiative) scheme to replace streetlamps with LED models in the northern Taiwanese city. Lite-On Technology and Delta Electronics have both won the city's PFI contracts to install 120,000 and 100,000 LED streetlamps, respectively, according to the companies.
Each of the two PFI contracts holds six years, with the first year for installing LED streetlamps and the subsequent five years for maintenance. The installation will begin in October 2014 and complete by the end of 2015. The contract values are NT$1.1 billion (US$36.3 million) for Lite-On and NT$700 million for Delta.
The 220,000 LED streetlamps, as compared with existing conventional models, will save power consumption by an estimated 49.308 million kWh a year, equivalent to reduction in carbon emissions by 26,232 metric tons.
Lite-On claimed it has become the largest supplier of LED streetlamps in the Taiwan market, and it will have a market share of 40% in the US, which will account for 60% of its LED streetlamp shipments in 2014.
Lite-On said it expects to ship 300,000 LED streetlamps in 2014 and 400,000 units in 2015.
