Hyundai Motor will build two factories in China this year, increasing its manufacturing units in the country to five.
The two new plants will be built at Cangzhou, Hebei province and Chongqing in southeast China.
Each plant is expected to have an annual production capacity of 300,000 units.
Once completed in 2018, the two plants will have the capacity to produce up to 1.65 million cars a year in China.
The plant in Hebei will start operations in the second half of 2016 with an initial annual capacity of 200,000 units. It is later expected to increase to 300,000 units.
The plant will be built on a 2.095 million square meters site, with vehicle production facilities like stamping, welding, painting, assembly and module lines.
Hyundai will begin construction of the Chongqing plant in the third quarter. The plant will feature complete vehicle and engine production facilities and will be built on a two million square meter.
Starting the first half of 2017, the facility will roll out small and mid-size models specifically designed for the Chinese market.
Hyundai opened its first plant in China in 2002 and the second in 2008, doubling its annual production capacity to 600,000 units.
In 2012, the company added a third plant with which its total annual production capacity reached more than one million units a year.
Reuters reported that the company had initially planned to build just one plant in southwestern Chongqing to meet the increase in demand in that part of the country. However, it decided to add another facility after the Chinese Government wanted Hyundai to build a plant in northeastern Hebei province as part of a development plan for the area.
