LG has announced a seriously impressive 4K monitor that supports HDR, with the promise to fully unveil the new screen in January.
The LG 32UD99 is an Ultra HD monitor, which means it has an impressive 3,840 x 2,160 pixel resolution. But that’s nothing to write home about; 4K monitors have been knocking about for a while now.
The real selling point is its support for High Dynamic Range content, specifically the HDR 10 standard. High Dynamic Range content has a greater range of contrast (brightness and darkness), as well as colours. This means you’ll have a nicer and more realistic image when viewing HDR content on a HDR-friendly screen.
HDR is already widely available on televisions, although it usually kicks up the retail price a fair bit. But on computer monitors, we’re only now starting to see the first HDR-friendly displays, which is why LG’s new monitor is a big deal.
Speaking at the announcement, Tim Alessi, LG’s Head of Product Marketing in the states, said: “As the availability of HDR content continues to expand across a wide range of categories, from movies to games, LG is leading the way in bringing this enhancement to desktop monitors.”
“The enhanced picture quality offered by HDR technology is instantly recognisable to even the most casual user, and manufacturers are already pushing this promising technology to its fullest potential, continued Alessi, adding: “From high-resolution displays compatible with HDR technology, to UltraWide monitors optimised for multitasking and gaming, LG is committed to delivering the most state-of-the-art and premium monitors in the industry today.”
The LG 32UD99 has a 32-inch screen with a 4K resolution. It’s an IPS panel, and can display over 95% of the DCI-P3 colour gamut, which means it’ll be great for watching HDR videos and playing HDR games, but also seriously useful for creative types who need accurate colour reproduction.
And HDR isn’t the only future-fondling feature; the LG 32UD99 also boasts a USB Type C port, which LG hopes will “minimise the number of unsightly cables”. You’ll be able to stream images to a 4K display, charge your laptop, and execute data transfers all simultaneously using a single cable, for instance. The monitor also rocks a slim ArcLine stand, has borderless edges, and comes with built-in speakers that make use of LG’s Rich Bass technology.
LG says the new monitor will be on show at CES 2017, the annual Las Vegas tradeshow, in January, so the TrustedReviews team will definitely be taking a good look at it next month.
Unfortunately, pricing and availability remain a mystery for now.
