German carmaker BMW Group has partnered with Japanese automaker Toyota to develop a joint platform for sports cars.
Both companies will choose one particular model from different proposals that were under consideration.
According to worldcarfans.com, the new model will be anything from a BMW Z4 successor to a Lexus LFA successor.
BMW development chief Herbert Diess was quoted by Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as saying that they have agreed on a joint architecture for a sports car.
"What is important is that there will be two different vehicles that are authentic to the two brands," Diess added.
The carmakers signed an agreement to co-operate on with each other on areas including lithium-air batteries and lightweight technology in January 2013.
BMW and Toyota also agreed to study the potential for a joint platform for a mid-sized sports vehicle in a feasibility study to be completed by the end of 2013.
