Through rough calculation, the GDP of Hainan province in 2005 is 90.36 billion RMB. Converted by the present rate of exchange, the GDP per capita of Hainan is about 1,357 US dollar.

(ii) Resources, Agriculture and Industry
Biological resources
Hainan is rich in biological resources, known as a "green treasure house". It is the country's largest tropically botanical garden, and the most abundant species gene pool. Various kinds of tropical woods, tropical flowers, tropical fruits and natural medicinal materials are growing here in Hainan.
Energy resources
Fossil resource: Confirmed by geological exploration, Hainan is rich in oil and natural gas resources, leading to the delineation of the Beibu Gulf, the Yinggehai, Qiongdongnan three large sedimentary basin, with a total area of about 120,000 square kilometers. Of which, there are favorable area for oil and gas exploration for long-term strategy of about 60,000 square kilometers.
Water Resource
The large and small rivers of Hainan have hydropower resources of about 100 million kilowatts in theory, and about 65 million kilowatts is available for exploitation, with the electricity generation of about 26 billion kwh. Underground water reserves are about 75 billion cubic meters, accounting for 20% of total water resources. There are theoretically about 2.53 billion cubic meters available for exploitation.
Mineral resources
In Hainan, there are various mineral resources. A total of 88 types of minerals were found. After evaluation, there are 66 types of industrial minerals reserves in more than 320 origins. 44 types in 205 origins are listed in the "Hainan Mineral Reserves Table". Hainan's major mineral resources include energy, ferrous metals, nonferrous metals, precious metals, rare metals, rare and rare earth elements, supplemental metallurgical materials, chemical industrial materials, construction materials, other nonmetallic mining, underground water, hot water and natural mineral water for drinking and other types of mines. The mineral resources with proved amount reaching the top list of the nation's advantageous minerals are natural gas, glass sand, titanium ore, zircon ore, precious stones, rich iron ore, auxite (Sanshui type), decorating granite, natural spring water for drinking, hot mineral water and so on. The natural gas are mainly distributed in the surrounding area of Hainan island, with the mainly proved large natural gas fields as Yingge Ya 13-1, Eastern 1-1, Le Dong 22-1, etc.
Salt resources
Hainan is an ideal natural salt field. Many places in coastal shoals can insolate salt Harbor, which mainly focus along the several hundred miles coastal from Sanya to Dongfang. There are completed large salt fields such as Yinggehai, Dongfang, Yuya, etc. Yinggehai salt field is one of the country's largest salt fields.
Aquatic resources
Hainan's marine aquatic resources features of large ocean fisheries, wide varieties, fast growth and long fishing season. It is the ideal place for tropical marine fisheries development. The province's total area of marine fisheries is nearly 300,000 square kilometers, with the coastal beach area of 25,700 hectares for the aquaculture. There are more than 800 species of marine products, 600 types of fish, 40 of which are the major marine economy ones. Many precious species are bred in shallow sea and the area of beach for artificial breeding is more than 25,000 hectares. There are 20 kinds of species with high economic value for breeding such as fish, shrimp, Bedouin and algae. Fresh water fish (not including the anadromous fish), there were 15 families and 57 genera 72 species.
Agriculture
In the year of 2005, the province's agricultural added value is 30.11 billion yuan. Agricultural structure had been further adjusted, the characteristic of tropical, efficiency, and the effects of pollution-free are highlighted.

Foreign Trade
In 2005, the total imports and exports of Hainan Province was US$2,592 million. In which the total export is US$1,022 million, down by 6.4% compared to last year. The total import is US$1,570 million. Among the total export, export value of the non-processing trade (including the export of natural gas) is US$876 million. The export value of the processing trade reaches US$144 million. The total export made by foreign funded enterprises arrives at US$400 million.
There are altogether 2,191 kinds of export goods. Among the export goods, 20 kinds of goods are of large quantity, each with export value over US$10 million. Their total export value reaches US$794 million, accounting for 77.7% of the whole export value. Of the major export commodities, 6 products such as natural gas, garment, aquatic products, textiles, furniture, iron and steel and their products have an export value of over US$50 million.

Structure of Import Commodities
The import value of the primary product was US$ 307 million, accounting for 19.6% of the total import value. And the import value of the industrial finished product was US$ 1,262 million, accounting for 80.4% of the total import value. There were altogether 1,597 kinds of import goods. Among them, 11 types of goods were with import value of US$ 20 million, including transportation vehicles, machinery equipment, steel and its product, other mineral products, medicine wood and its product, plastics and its product, instruments, electric apparatus and equipments, textiles and coals. All the import products were from 66 countries and regions. Among them, the import value from 15 countries and regions exceeded US$ 20 million, including the USA, Japan,Germany, Vienam, France,Taiwan, Inan, Singpove, Hongkong, Canada, Malysia, Italy, Australia, Thailand, and Indonisia.

Utilization of foreign capital
In 2005, 174 foreign funded enterprises (projects) have been approved, with a contracted value of US$342 million. Direct foreign investment is US$684 million. In view of the investment origins, Asian countries and regions remain the largest investment origins of our province with 127 enterprises with the contracted foreign capital of US$219 million.
International economic and technological cooperation
In 2005, 2 outsourcing engineering contracts have been signed with a value of US$8.9 million. A business volume of US$7.15 million has been accomplished, 10 times as that at the same period of last year. 59 workers have been sent to work in the foreign countries. 333 people still stay in the foreign countries at the end of the year. 8 technological introducing contracts have been signed with the value of US$43.69 million. The exports value of high and new technological products reach US$35.3 million. One project has obtained international aid given gratis with a value of EU$3 million. At present, 3 projects with international aid given gratis has been carried out.
Domestic Trade
In 2005, the total retail sales of consumer goods reached 26,855.06 million. Among the total retail sales, the retail sales of consumer goods in urban areas is 19,068.02 million,in the counties 1,971.15 million and in towns and villages 5,815.89 million. In view of industries, the volume of wholesale and retail sale is 21,083.18 million, for the catering trade 4,609.98 million and for other industries 1,161.9 million.
