New Words in New Era

It’s hard to remember an era when words like "sushi" and "burrito" were not a part of the everyday American lexicon.

There is a selection of new words, definitions, and senses added to the dictionary. The words originate in a range of spheres from food and music to astronomy and, unsurprisingly, technology ,and include a variety of different word forms, from compound nouns to initialisms and abbreviations.

Food culture has always been a reflection of the changing times and 2014 was no exception. The American Heritage Dictionary, Oxford Dictionaries Online, and Merriam-Webster all added several new foodie phrasings to their repertoire this year. The adoption of the words marks an important tipping point as the culture from which they originated assimilates into Western language.

Popular Chinese expressions are also making their way into the Oxford English Dictionary, like "tuhao" and "dama".The dictionary previously selected the words guanxi, dim sim and taikonaut for inclusion.and it is still possible that the words could be excluded before the final update.
