Yao People Living in Huangluo Village Believe That Women's Long Hair Can Bring Longevity

Women from the Huangluo Village of the Yao ethnic group in Guilin, southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, only cut their hair once in their lifetimes, just before they get married. The village women's tradition of keeping their hair long has earned their hometown a place in the Guinness World Records.

The Yao people living in Huangluo Village believe that women's long hair can bring longevity, wealth and good luck, which means that the longer a woman's hair is, the more luck she will bring her family.

According to their culture, a woman's hair should only be seen by her husband and children. Traditionally, if a man were to catch a glimpse of a woman without her head scarf, he would have to live with her family for three years as a son-in-law. Fortunately, the stiff tradition was abandoned in 1987.

The average length of the women's hair in the village is 1.7 meters.
