The Australian dollar has hit a six-week low after most metals prices fell during the offshore session on Friday night.

At 6.30am AEST the local unit was trading at 102.78 US cents, down from 103.43 cents on Friday.

Earlier today the currency dropped to 102.59 its lowest level since March 11.
