Australia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained steady at 5.7 per cent in July, as announced by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today.
The ABS reported the number of people employed decreased by 10,200 to 11,653,200 in July. The decrease in employment was due to decreased full-time employment, down 6,700 people to 8,133,900, and part-time employment, down 3,500 to 3,519,300. Full-time and part-time employment decreased for both females and males.
The number of people unemployed decreased by 5,700 people to 705,400 in July.
The ABS monthly seasonally adjusted aggregate hours worked series showed an increase in July, up 7.9 million hours to 1,648.6 million hours. The seasonally adjusted labour force participation rate decreased 0.2 percentage points to 65.1 per cent in July.
The increased number of hours worked, despite the decrease in full and part-time employment, evidences an increasing casualisation of the workforce.
