Tablet Processor Sales Are Expected to Grow 50% in 2013.

Improvement in global PC demand and continued growth in mobile SoC processors are expected to drive sales of microprocessors during this year, according to a new report.

Microprocessor sales are expected to rise by 12% in 2013 to $65.3bn compared to $58.2bn in 2012, the report added.

During the year, cellphone application processor sales are expected to grow 28% $17bn compared to $13.3bn last year.

During 2012, tablet and smartphone unit shipments rose 80% and 55% respectively.

According to the research firm, about 95% of tablet and cellphone SoC processors are currently developed with microprocessor technology and cores from ARM, rather than x86 microarchitecture used in desktop computers, portable notebook PCs and servers.

The report also reveals that market for tablet processors is projected to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22% through 2017, while cellphone application processor sales are projected to rise by a CAGR of 24%.

Revenues for MPUs in PCs, servers, and embedded applications are forecast to grow at an annual rate of 7% during 2017.
