10 Students of The University of Karachi Received The Posco Asia Fellowship

10 students of the University of Karachi received the POSCO Asia Fellowship at a ceremony on December 21stFriday.

The ceremony was jointly organized by the KU and the POSCO TJ Park Foundation.

After the ceremony, a MoU was signed between POSCO TJ Park Foundation, formerly the Pohang Iron and Steel Company and the KU through which more students of the university would be able to receive the fellowship.

The POSCO Foundation has included the KU in its fellowship program for the first time and indicated that the foundation would take more high achieving students at the departmental level from the university in the future.

POSCO TJ Park Foundation, a global steelmaker POSCO established non profit organization for the purpose of the company’s social contributions, is networking with over 300 students from 19 universities in 10 Asian countries including China, Vietnam, India, Mongolia and Thailand.

According to a representative of the Foundation, around 2,685 students from 36 universities in 12 Asian countries have received the fellowship in the past.

The POSCO TJ Park Foundation has been rewarding individuals and organizations that have made extraordinary contributions in the categories of science, education and community development and philanthropy since 2007.

Mr Lee Woo-In executive vice president of the POSCO TJ Park Foundation said that “For the first time this year, 10 undergraduate students from the university have received scholarship certificates under the name of the POSCO Asia Fellowship, the prestigious $500 per person scholarship that is being awarded every year to outstanding university students in Asian countries since 2005.”

Mr Lee said that “It is our great honor and pleasure to initiate the POSCO Asia Fellowship this year between the KU and the POSCO TJ Park Foundation. POSCO has invested 15 million dollars equity in the construction of Tuwairqi Steel Mills Limited in Karachi and is going into commercial production within few days.”

He said that “I believe our efforts today will be a milestone to enhance mutual understanding and co-prosperity between Pakistan and Korea.”

On the occasion, the consul general of the Republic of Korea in Karachi, he, appreciated the efforts of the outstanding students and said Pakistan was a country with a population of around 180 million, rich with natural resources and loaded with dexterous manpower; enough recipe for a nation to make it to the top.
