All public spaces will be fitted with energy efficient lights after Radisson and Missoni owner signs major deal with Philips
Rezidor has announced over 300 of its hotels worldwide will swap all their standard light bulbs in public spaces for energy efficient LEDs by the end of next year.
The owner of the Radisson, Missoni, and Regent hotel brands has signed a deal with Philips to complete the transformation of its portfolio as part of its ThinkPlanet sustainability plan, Inge Huijbrechts, director of responsible business at Rezidor, told BusinessGreen.
"One of the things we're going to do across the board is the move to LED lighting in all our public areas by the end of 2013," she said. "Philips will provide technical assistance and design assistance for the different hotels because it's very important to choose the right lighting and take into account aspects like dimming and transformers, etc."
The Think Planet programme is aiming to deliver a 25 per cent reduction in energy consumption by 2016 and is expected to save the company €25m over the same period by focusing on relatively simple, low cost improvements.
Huijbrechts said the return on investment for larger renewable energy installations was too long for the company to consider, but added that she would push to set up supply deals with clean electricity providers.
Hotels are increasingly looking to reduce their environmental impact in response to increasing awareness of environmental issues among business travellers.
A group of leading hotel companies launched a standardised method of measuring the hospitality sector's carbon impact earlier this year. It was followed by hotel chain Accor unveiling a tool allowing its customers to track the carbon footprint of events, right down to the number of attendees and what meals are served.
