Building activity in the USA, particularly apartment construction, increased following a rise in demand in February 2013. Building starts, according to US Census Bureau, increased in the twelve months up to and including March by 7% compared with the twelve month period to February to a total of 1.036m In the case of units in apartment buildings, there was in fact an increase of 26.9% to 392,000. By contrast there was a decline of 4.8% to 619,000 in the case of building starts on detached houses. Completions increased by 11% in the twelve month period to a total of 800,000. Building permission granted reflected a decline on the very high level of the preceding month of 3.9% to 902,000.
