LG will announce its new flagship phone at MWC 2016 on February 21. Among the expected new features will be a bold new design and an always-on display.

But perhaps the most intriguing addition is that of a so-called accessory slot on the bottom of the device, which we've also seen referred to as a 'modular design.'

According to a new VentureBeat report from arch tipster Evan Blass, the LG G5 will be accompanied by the launch of various plug-in modules that extend the phone's functionality.

LG is apparently calling this modular approach "G5 and Friends". The range will include a battery grip for photography, and a digital audio chip (DAC) for enhanced sound.

The camera grip will be called the LG Cam Plus, and will include hardware controls for the shutter, zoom, and flash. It'll also provide additional power in the form of a 1,100mAh battery.

As for the DAC, it'll be called the LG Hi-Fi Plus with B&O Play. As that suggests, it represents a team-up with high-end audio company Bang & Olufsen. It's apparently capable of enhancing any sound routed through it, whether native or from another device.

Those are the only two modules LG is planning on announcing initially, though you can be sure that there are more in the pipeline. Each attached module will apparently be controlled through an app called LG Friends Manager.

However it turns out, it's a lot more exciting than the peel-off back of the LG G4 (pictured) and its predecessors.

The report also claims that LG will be going to town on LG G5 accessories, with an LG 360 Cam for capturing 360-degree images and videos. There'll also be a LG 360 VR headset for viewing this and other VR content back.

LG's even launching a remote control (ground-based) drone called the Rolling Bot. It'l come equipped with a camera and speaker, and can even send signals for turning smart appliances on and off.

We've already seen the LG G5's new Quick Cover case, of course, which suddenly seems pretty tame.
