iPhone 5SE and iPad Air 3 Chips Tipped

We've received the strongest indication yet as to the identification of the chips bound for the forthcoming iPhone 5SE and iPad Air 3.

Apple is said to be holding an event in mid-March to launch a new 4-inch smartphone in the iPhone 5SE, and a new full-sized tablet in the iPad Air 3.

There's been much speculation as to which chips will be powering both devices - particularly in the case of the iPhone 5SE. Will it take a step back from the current flagship iPhone in power as well as size?

The answer appears to be no, if a recent Bloomberg report is to be believed.

In a profile piece on Apple's head of chip design, Johny Srouji, it's claimed (through an anonymous source, it should be noted) that the iPhone 5SE will be powered by an A9 chip. The iPad Air 3 will be driven by an A9X.

This means that the iPhone 5SE will be of equivalent power (or at least similar, depending on the clock speed and RAM) to the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus.

Meanwhile the iPad Air 3 will be right up there with the premium iPad Pro in terms of raw performance - again depending on clock speed and RAM.
