McLaren has announced a new track-only edition of its MP4 12C supercar, called the McLaren 12 C GT Sprint.
The latest addition to the McLaren 12C family is intended to bridge the gap between the road-legal version and the hardcore 12C GT3 and 12C GT Can-Am models.
As with the 12C, the GT Sprint is based on McLaren’s carbonfibre MonoCell chassis and incorporates some of the engineering features on the 12C GT3 racer.
Power from the 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 is up from 441kW to 460kW thanks to a unique oil and cooling system derived from the GT3 edition. The GT Sprint also retains the 12C’s seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
Additional upgrades include a revised suspension that is stiffer than the standard car, as well as riding 40mm lower along with its ability to accommodate racing tyres.
McLaren has also optimised the exterior of the 12C Sprint with enhanced aerodynamics including a more aggressive front splitter and GT3-inspired bonnet with added air ducts.
Further racing enhancements include a standard on-board air jacking system and centre-locking 19-inch OZ wheels wrapped in Pirelli racing slicks.
The interior of the 12C GT Sprint has been designed to comply with all FIA regulations, which means a roll-cage, integrated fire extinguisher system and racing seat fitted with a six-point harness are all standard fitment.
There’s also an air conditioning system to keep the driver cool, though it’s a less powerful version that in the standard MP4-12C.
Key vehicle controls include a race developed digital display housed in a carbonfibre dash, as well as a switch that allows the driver to select one of three handling modes, which alters the damping, roll stiffness and stability control settings.
Set to make its world debut at this weekend’s Goodwood festival of Speed, the 12C GT Sprint will be available exclusively in heritage McLaren Orange.
McLaren plans to produce a limited run of just 20 units of the 12C GT Sprint this year with an asking price around £200,000 (circa $327,000).
