Knitwear exports from Tirupur cluster have registered a growth of 15.5 per cent in terms of rupee and 15.9 per cent in terms of foreign currencies during the just ended 2014-15 financial, according to a press statement issued by Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA).
According to TEA, the export statistics were arrived at after consolidating the data obtained from 38 banks in Tirupur and nearby areas.
The TEA data showed knitwear products worth Rs 20,730 crore were exported from Tirupur cluster during 2014-15 fiscal compared to Rs 18,000 crore worth of exports in the previous fiscal.
Banking sources said that the banks at micro level usually could provide only the data of overall items exported, though over 90 per cent of the exports from Tirupur region were readymade garments.
A Sakthivel, the president of TEA, was of the view that the readymade garment exports from Tirupur could touch Rs 36,000 crore by 2016-17 fiscal if certain issues faced by the cluster were addressed by the Central government. Various industry bodies were demanding that speedy execution of free trade agreement with European Union and Canada could help the knitwear exporters here increase their market share.
