The Tire Industry Association (TIA) announced the 2014 schedule for its Certified Commercial Tire Service (CTS) Instructor Training and Certification classes in Baltimore, Md., and Denver, Colo.
TIA says its Certified CTS Instructor program exceeds the minimum training requirements established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and covers all aspects of truck tire and wheel service. Topics include OSHA regulations, mounting/demounting/inflation, torque, puncture repair, balancing and road service.
The CTS Instructor Course is a train-the-trainer model that combines classroom and hands-on demonstrations, giving the students the tools and knowledge they will need to impart that information on their tire service technicians, according to TIA.
"Because we use a train-the-trainer model, the program gives commercial tire dealers the flexibility to hold training classes when they are the most convenient so normal operations are not interrupted," says Kevin Rohlwing, senior vice president of training.
"It allows dealers and fleets to comply with OSHA regulations and establish a qualified workforce without the expense of extensive travel."
TIA offers both a four-day and a three-day program. The four-day students arrive on Tuesday and participate in one full day of hands-on training. Each student will physically demount, mount, install, remove and repair a tubeless truck tire. On Wednesday, the four-day students join the three-day students for classroom instruction and hands-on demonstrations.
Participants with less than two years of hands-on commercial truck tire experience must register for the four-day class. Those with more than two years of experience may register for either class option.
The 2014 CTS Instructor schedule is as follows:
Baltimore (three-day): April 30-May 2; Sept. 17-19; Dec. 10-12
Baltimore (four-day): April 29-May 2; Sept. 16-19; Dec. 9-12
Denver (three-day): March 5-7; May 21-23; Oct. 8-10
Denver (four-day): March 4-7; May 20-23; Oct. 7-10
Baltimore classes are held at the Community College of Baltimore County in Catonsville, Md. Denver classes are held at Lincoln College of Technology in Aurora, Colo. Both schools are convenient to the Baltimore-Washington (BWI) and Denver International airports. TIA has negotiated special hotel rates in both cities that include shuttle service to and from the airports and the colleges.
