The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has introduced new labeling rules, which will help shoppers to obtain information about the origin of their meat
The new rules, which are set to bring the US in accordance with the standards of the World Trade Organization, require labels on steaks, ribs and other cuts of meat to inform shoppers about the origin of the animal and where it was raised and slaughtered, AP reported.
Previous USDA rules required only labeling to be displayed on a package as 'Produce of US and Canada', while the label at present has to specify 'Born in Canada, raised and slaughtered in the United States.'
According to the USDA estimates, in order to incorporate the change in labeling, it may cost between $53.1m and $192.1m.
Meat processed or packaged prior to introducing the new labeling rules can be sold with older labels, and any of the labels already printed by the meat companies can be used.
