Sri Lanka Has Lifted The Temporary Ban on Fonterra's Anchor Milk Powder Sales

Sri Lanka has lifted the temporary ban on Fonterra's Anchor milk powder sales after local investigation found the products to be safe for consumption and not an agent for triggering illness in children.

A ban was imposed by the government on the sale of three batches of 400g Fonterra's Anchor milk powder last week after children in a village fell ill on consumption of the product.

Last week, Fonterra found that the three batches with a total weight of 76 metric tonnes were safe to consume during its independent investigations.

Fonterra Brands Sri Lanka managing director Leon Clement said: "We have been working with the Ministry of Health to lift the temporary hold and are pleased that the ministry's investigation has confirmed our own internal findings that there is no food safety or quality issue with our product."

Sri Lanka's public health inspectors' association secretary Senerath Bandara was quoted by Reuters as saying: "The director general of health today said that the sample tests have not found any negative reports and asked to release the three batches held."

In 2013, Sri Lanka's National Health Services Union banned the sale of Fonterra products citing the presence of high levels of nitrates in the company's milk powder.

Fonterra also halted operations in Sri Lanka earlier as a political party in the country protested against the company seeking to boost the businesses of local dairy farmers.
