India's Central Board of Excise and Customs Imposed a 2.5 Percent Import Duty

India's Central Board of Excise and Customs has imposed a 2.5 percent import duty on melting scrap and stainless steel scrap, according to notification published on May 8. India has not collected any duties from scrap imports until now.

According to data issued by the India-based Sponge Iron Manufacturers Association (SIMA), India is estimated to have imported 8 million mt of steel melting scrap during the financial year 2012-13. In 2011, crude steel production by electric arc furnaces in India accounted for 58.6 percent of total domestic crude steel production, according to worldsteel figures.
