China- and Taiwan-Based Solar-Grade Crystalline Silicon Wafer Makers to Increase Quotes

China- and Taiwan-based solar-grade crystalline silicon wafer makers, in view of growing demand for PV systems in the China market, plan to increase quotes from US$0.88-0.89/wafer in August to US$0.90-0.92, and from US$0.90 to US$0.92-0.94, respectively, according to industry sources.

The China government has set a target total capacity of 13GWp for PV systems to be installed around China in 2014, the sources said. However, total installation capacity for the first half of the year was only 3.3GWp, meaning that PV systems to be installed in the second half should reach nearly 10GWp to hit the target, the sources indicated.

Currently, China- and Taiwan-based crystalline silicon solar cell makers have not yet accepted planned hikes in solar-grade wafer prices, the sources said. Success in the price hike will hinge on whether PV system installations in China increase as expected, the sources indicated.
