Waitrose to Introduce New Recyclable Sandwich Wrapper

UK retailer Waitrose is set to introduce new triangular sandwich wrappers, which can be easily recycled and reused.

The new sandwich wrappers, which will be launched in August, were developed with the support of packaging manufacturer RAP and sandwich producers Melton Foods.

According to Waitrose, all its own-label packaging will be widely recyclable, reusable or home compostable by 2025.

The new triangular packaging has been developed by using cardboard, which can be easily separated from the plastic film that covers the food.

Through a peelable tab, the consumer can easily remove the film from the cardboard.

Processors can separate he paper element from the film easily, even if customers throw the whole pack away.

Waitrose packaging manager Karen Graley said: “The change to our sandwich packaging may seem like a small one but it’s likely to make a big impact on the amount of packaging recycled.

“We continue to work on a solution to the pack’s plastic film in the hope that, in the future, none of the sandwich pack will go to landfill.

“Our ambition for 100 per cent of our own-label packaging being widely recyclable, reusable or home compostable by 2025 is set to make a tangible difference to the environment.”

Waitrose currently operates 354 shops in England, Scotland, Wales and the Channel Islands, including 64 convenience branches and another 27 shops at Welcome Break locations.
