In January this year, Italy's finished steel exports totaled 1.253 million metric tons, down by 9.7 percent, while its finished steel imports amounted to 1.331 million metric tons, up 25.2 percent, both year on year, as announced by the Italian steel producers' association Federacciai.
In particular, in January Italy's flat product imports rose by 35 percent (up 13.3 percent for imports from the EU and up 83.4 percent for imports from non-EU countries), long product imports increased by 18 percent (respectively up 19.8 percent for imports from the EU and increasing by 23.8 percent for imports from non-EU countries), while ingot and semi-finished product imports rose by 15.6 percent (down 5.3 percent and up 19.4 percent respectively), all year on year.
On the other hand, in January this year Italy's flat steel exports were down 13.2 percent (down 7.3 percent for exports to the EU and down 29.5 percent for exports to non-EU countries) and long steel exports fell 6.4 percent (down 0.5 percent and 16.8 percent respectively) year on year.
In January, Italy was a net exporter of long steel products and a net importer of semi-finished products. Meanwhile, Italy recorded net imports of flat steel products amounting to about 260,000 mt in the given month.
