The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the US has updated the number of vehicles that are affected by faulty airbags made by Takata.
According to NHTSA, 10 automotive manufacturers have issued recall of nearly 6.1 million vehicles in the US and the companies must fix the issue soon.
The regulatory body also said that the number is much higher than the 4.6 million vehicles that have been recalled.
BMW, Ford, Chrysler, Honda, General Motors, Mazda, Nissan Mitsubishi, Toyota and Subaru are the manufacturers that have already recalled its vehicles which started 18 months ago.
Toyota is the latest vehicle manufacturer to issue the recall of additional 247,000 vehicles because the Takata airbags integrated in the vehicles could be could rupture in humid areas.
Detroit Free Press reported NHTSA Deputy Administrator David Friedman saying: "Responding to these recalls, whether old or new, is essential to personal safety and it will help aid our ongoing investigation into Takata airbags and what appears to be a problem related to extended exposure to consistently high humidity and temperatures."
