Enterprise cloud computing firm Salesforce.com has joined the UK government's G-Cloud framework, the cross-departmental initiative focused on introducing cloud computing across the public sector.
It means government organisations can now obtain Salesforce 's cloud computing applications and platform through the G-Cloud Cloudstore.

"The G-Cloud programme presents a huge opportunity for public-sector organisations to improve efficiencies through cloud services and provides the potential for further innovation," said Denise McDonagh, Home Office director of IT strategy and delivery and director of the G-Cloud programme.
"As a result we are pleased to expand the G-Cloud framework with Salesforce.com. We are working hard to continually advance the framework to ensure that it develops in line with the needs of the public sector and enables us to make best use of new and emerging technologies," she added.
Government departments are increasingly moving towards the cloud as part of a green IT strategy.
Salesforce.com praised the G-Cloud for its ability to help government departments to provide better services at a lower cost.
"Record government deficits, failed legacy IT programmes, and a lack of public-sector innovation have created a tipping point for cloud computing," said Salesforce.com executive vice president for emerging markets Vivek Kundra.
"The G-Cloud represents the innovative path and is evidence of the unstoppable momentum of cloud computing in governments around the world," he added.
Salesforce.com's government customers include Japan Post in Japan and Nasa in the US, although a recent report suggests 80 per cent of customers may not be achieving a maximum return on investment.
