Due to strong demand for LED backlighting in smartphones and LED lighting, global demand for LED chips has rebounded in the first quarter of 2015, earlier than previously as the first quarter is traditionally an off season , according to Taiwan-based LED makers.
Booming shipments of LED chips and LED packaging are expected to persist in the first half of 2015 and prices will generally remain stable in the period, the sources said. Even prices for some high-end products may rise in the second quarter, the sources indicated. Currently, a high-power LED chip is quoted at about US$0.06 and a mid-power one at below US$0.03, the sources noted.
Epistar, the largest Taiwan-based LED epitaxial wafer and chip maker, has received orders with urgent shipments from LED lighting vendors and therefore expects utilization of its production capacity to gradually increase to over 70% in March.
