Overnight Plans to Shut Down The Street Lamp The Town Is a Way to Save Money

Residents in Rye will soon have their chance to raise any concerns that they have to the council over plans to turn off street lights overnight in the town as a way of saving money.

East Sussex County Council is hoping to push through the proposals and will hold a public consultation on the matter.

If they are given the green light, the proposals would see street illuminations turned off completely at Tilling Green and Kings Avenue between 00:30 and 05:30.

However, some have raised concerns that a lack of lighting could be dangerous for people walking the streets.

LED lights have been trialled in other areas of the county and it is still possible that they could be implemented in the region.

The savings that could be made from inputting the energy-efficient illuminations would far outweigh the initial costs of the installation.

If this scheme goes ahead, there will be a full six-month review following the implementation of it.

The object of this is to reduce the authority's carbon footprint, saving an estimated 25 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year, as well as reducing the running costs, the Rye and Battle Observer reports.

A spokesperson for the Tilling Green Residents Association doesn't agree with the scheme, telling Rye Town Council's public services committee: "The night club in Ferry Road stays open until 02:00 and a lot of young people from the estate go there.

"Paving on the estate is already in a poor state and badly needs addressing."

An increasing number of authority's in the UK are looking at implementing LED street lights as a way of saving money in the long run.

Indeed, the recent plan to install new remote control energy-saving illuminations across Wakefield could save the local authority millions of pounds by 2030.
