A consortium of European automakers consisting of Audi, BMW and Daimler has completed the acquisition of Nokia’s maps and location services Here for €2.55bn.
HERE is a location based platform that can deliver high definition maps along with real-time location information from mapping technology which is combined with data sources from cars, mobile phones, along with information from transport and logistics sector.
Daimler highlighted that Here will be an independent company, but the consortium partners will have equal rights on it.
Daimler expects that the data gathered by the two million connected vehicles produced by AUDI, BMW Group and Daimler will help further boost the location capability of Here.
It is expected to enhance Here's location platform, improve its products and generate new services for all customers of the three companies.
BMW member of the board of management Klaus Fro hlich said: "The combination of this leading map technology with data from vehicles, devices and infrastructure will give HERE and its customers a clear advantage in the development of future mobility services.
"As more partners and customers join this model, HERE will be able to provide even better, more up-to-date maps and a precise digital real-time representation of our world of mobility."
Currently, automakers are trying to introduce new features to cars by connecting them to smartphones, which has opened up a market for location-based services.
