Industrial Producer Prices Decreased by 0.5 Percent in The Euro Area

According to the report released by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities, in October this year industrial producer prices decreased by 0.5 percent in the euro area and by 0.6 percent in the European Union member states (EU-28), both month on month. In October this year as compared to October 2012, industrial producer prices fell by 1.4 percent in the euro area and by 1.1 percent in the EU-28.

In October this year compared with the previous month, prices in overall industry excluding the energy sector fell by 0.1 percent in both the euro area and the EU-28. In October, the prices of durable consumer goods and capital goods remained stable, while prices of non-durable consumer goods dropped by 0.3 in the euro area and by 0.2 percent in the EU-28. In both zones prices of intermediate goods declined by 0.2 percent compared to previous month.

Among the member states for which data are available, the largest month-on-month increases were recorded in Estonia and Cyprus (both +0.2%) and Sweden (+0.1%), while the largest decreases were registered in Croatia, Italy and Hungary (all -1.3%) and Denmark (-1.1%), while prices in Malta remained stable.

In October of the current year as compared to October 2012, prices in overall industry excluding the energy sector decreased by 0.3 percent in the euro area and by 0.1 percent in the EU-28, while prices in the energy sector fell by 3.6 percent and 3.3 percent respectively. Prices of intermediate goods decreased by 1.8 percent in the euro area and by 1.5 percent in the EU-28. Prices of capital goods rose by 0.5 percent in the euro area and by 0.6 percent in the EU-28, prices of durable consumer goods moved up by 0.5 percent in the euro area and by 0.3 percent in the EU-28, while prices of non-durable consumer goods increased by 1.1 percent in the euro area and by 1.3 percent in the EU-28, all year on year.

Among member states for which data are available, the largest year-on-year increases in the overall index were observed in Estonia (+10.9%), Ireland (+1.6%), Denmark (+1.3%) and in Romania (+1.0%), while the largest decreases were seen in Cyprus (-4.0%), Bulgaria (-3.9%), Netherlands (-3.7%), and in Croatia (-3.0%).
