Cintas Corporation, an apparel uniforms program provider said that has recycled 19.5 million PET bottles and diverted them from landfills to manufacture apparel.
Cintas uses plant-based ingredients and plastic bottles to create fibres and in doing so, diverted more than 19.5 million 16.9 ounce plastic bottles from landfill.
According to a Cintas press release, this is equivalent to placing 16.9 ounce bottles end-to-end from Las Vegas to New York City.
“The theme of Earth Day this year is ‘It’s Our Turn to Lead,’ serving as a reminder for everyone to step up and make a positive impact on our planet,” said Pamela Brailsford, senior director (Sustainability) at Cintas.
“We lead by supporting local communities and offering sustainable products and services and through these efforts, we reduce our environmental footprint and help customers to do the same,” she added.
In addition to its eco-apparel collections with recycled polyester, Cintas also saves energy through the use of Dupont Sorona fabric, which is utilised in its AR Red and Jay Godfrey premium suiting collections.
DuPont Sorona is an eco-friendly, plant-based fibre made with renewable, naturally occurring starch and these collections were created in collaboration with two well-known designers, Jay Godfrey and Austin Reed.
“The production of this fabric uses 30 per cent less energy and reduces carbon dioxide emissions use in the manufacturing process by as much as 63 per cent,” Cintas informed.
Cintas further added that sales of the two collections saved the equivalent of 1,188 gallons of gas or 28 barrels of gasoline.
Providing statistics of energy savings by utilising recycled or plant-based fibres, Cintas said it is equivalent to lighting an average-sized building for more than 43 years or powering an air conditioner for 222 years.
In addition to sustainable apparel, Cintas operates industrial laundries that offer a 50 per cent water savings or the equivalent of filling 1,329 Olympic-sized pools compared to home laundry.
Cintas also reduces waste through its community outreach programs. In 1998, Cintas through a partnership with Matthew 25 has till date has donated more than 13.6 million pounds of products.
Matthew 25 in turn, used these products to aid its mission of serving people in need throughout the US and worldwide.
