U.S. Intermodal Rail Traffic Rose 4.6% Last Year From 2012

U.S. intermodal rail traffic rose 4.6% last year from 2012 to just over 12.8 million units, the Association of American Railroads reported Jan. 2.

Intermodal volume for the week ended Dec. 28 jumped 10.6% from a year ago to 172,396 units, AAR said in its weekly report.

Total combined U.S. weekly rail traffic dipped 0.5% for the 52-week period ended Dec. 28 to 14.6 million units. It gained 9.2% for the year's final full week, to 403,329 units.

Combined North American intermodal volume rose 4.4% for the year to 16.1 million units, and total rail traffic edged up 0.2% to 19.5 million carloads, AAR said.
