The total cost of ground transportation for Canadian shippers dropped 3.4 percent in July from June according to the results published by the Canadian General Freight Index.
Ground transportation costs have been slipping for the past few months, having slipped 0.4 percent in April, dropped 1.2 percent in May and dropped again by 1.8 percent in June.
"The decline from March to June of this year follows the same pattern as March to June of 2013, however this year the decline is not as steep," said Doug Payne, president of Nulogx.
“The decline in July was felt in all categories, however Domestic Truckload, Domestic LTL and Cross Border LTL saw the largest declines,” said Doug Payne, president of Nulogx. “Despite the decrease this month, the total cost of freight remains 3.5 percent above last year at this time.”
The Base Rate Index also decreased by 3.2 when compared to June 2014 and average fuel surcharges remained relatively unchanged (21.59 percent in July versus 21.57 percent in June).
