Sapphire maker Tera Xtal Technology will expand its PSS (patterned sapphire substrate) monthly production capacity from 100,000 units currently to 200,000 units by the end of 2014 due to fast growing demand for LED lighting, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report.
In addition to PSS, Tera Xtal has capacity to produce 200,000mm of sapphire ingots and 700,000 sapphire wafers per month in Taiwan and 300,000 sapphire wafers in China, the paper indicated. Tera Xtal has obtained orders for sapphire wafers to make smartphone lens covers, and has begun small-volume shipments of sapphire wafers to make smartphone screen covers to China-based vendors, the paper said.
