Aiming to enhance the quality of Eri Silk hand spun yarn, the Central Silk Technological Research Institute (CSTRI) has developed an economical silk spinning machine that runs on solar energy.
The Bangalore-based institute functioning under the Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, intends to introduce the new machine during the 12th Five-year Plan period (2012-17).
The new machine has been so developed that it can run on solar power or even by paddle operations, due to which CSTRI believes it would prove to be very useful in regions which face severe power supply shortage.
The new machine has a capacity to produce maximum 200 grams of 10s to 15s count spun yarn per day, which is almost two and a half times more than the production capacity of the traditional hand spinning device ‘takli’.
The new machine not only ensures higher productivity, but also the quality of the yarn and hand spun silk that the new device produces is found to be better than other hand spinning machines, a CSTRI statement said.
While ensuring better working conditions, the new machine also addresses some of the drawbacks of earlier versions, the statement adds.
