Need more room in the refrigerator? A couple of newcomers to Consumer Reports' tests of French-door refrigerators should deliver. With claimed 33-cubic-foot capacities, the Kenmore Elite 72093, $3,400, and the LG LFX33975ST, $3,000, are the largest refrigerators on the market. For all that storage, you might expect some trade-offs in the same way supersized automobiles tend to be less fuel efficient than compact models. But in fact, the Kenmore and LG are top performers, with nearly the highest scores in our Ratings of 260 refrigerators.
The Kenmore Elite 72093 and LG LFX33975ST each earned an overall score of 83 in ours tests, two points behind the top-rated model, the LG LFX28991[ST], $2,700, which isn't quite as large. Temperature performance, energy efficiency, and quietness were all superb, and dual evaporators should help keep food fresh longer by maintaining optimal humidity levels. The mega fridges also benefit from a bevy of convenience features, including a slim in-door icemaker that frees up storage space on the top shelf, an extra-tall external ice and water dispenser, and abundant LED lighting that helps you find what you're looking for fast.
You're paying a premium for the Kenmore Elite 72093 and the LG LFX33975ST—the majority of French-door models on our recommended list sell for $1,500 to $2,500. But if you have a large household, do a lot of entertaining, or have some other need for maximum capacity, these mega fridges are worth a look.
