Payments made by Nationwide customers were taken twice after human error at the bank duplicated the payment process.
Some payments made by current account holders on Tuesday 24 July were duplicated the next day. According to reports, 2 million transactions were affected.
Nationwide blamed human error in a statement. "This is a one-off isolated incident and is down to human error." The mistake had been corrected, said Nationwide.
Nationwide is going through a £1bn IT transformation programme which has seen it upgrade its datacentre, outsource IT for the first time and implement Microsoft technology in the front office and SAP at the back.
