Karro Food Plans to Shut Down Slaughter and Butchery Operations

UK-based pork processor Karro Food plans to shut down slaughter and butchery operations at Wiveliscombe site in Somerset, a move which will result in 113 job losses.

The company stated that the development is part of a strategic review of the company's operations to ensure the continued growth of the business. and will not affect the curing and foodservice operations at the facility.

Karro Food has entered into a 45-day consultation process with workers and their trade union representatives.

Karro CEO Seamus Carr said that the company will work with all the affected employees to help them find opportunities to transfer to other sites.

"There is over-capacity in the UK meat industry and we, in common with our competitors, need to ensure that our business is operating efficiently, and that our sites are at close-to full capacity."

"Sadly, our Wiveliscombe slaughter and butchery operation simply does not have the necessary scale to operate profitably and so we must propose this change in order to ensure our continued viability and growth, and safeguard other jobs across our business," Carr added.

Karro Food was formed following a management buyout of Vion's pork business unit in January when the Dutch firm had withdrawn from UK operations.
