BPA Is Safe to Be Used in Food Packaging and Does Not Pose a Health Risk

Health Canada has reaffirmed that bisphenol A(BPA)is safe to be used in food packaging and does not pose a health risk.

This is the latest update by the agency, which conducted an assessment in 2008.The announcement comes when the substance has been banned from being used in infant bottles since 2008.

In 2010,Environment Canada(EC)added BPA to the list of toxic substances.

The latest update comes after Health Canada carried out a probabilistic assessment and studied BPA concentrations in 132 food commodities under 33 categories, besides food intakes and body weights, reported Foodproductiondaily.com.

North American Metal Packaging Alliance chairman Dr John Rost was quoted by Foodproductiondaily.com as saying that Health Canada's assessment is based on actual exposure among all age groups from real-life food and beverage products, and should provide reassurance to consumers everywhere that BPA in food packaging is safe.
