Lights Are Using up Between 20 and 50 Per Cent of The Total Amount of Energy Consumed

Statistics show that the quantity of power being guzzled by many companies' lighting solutions is not only disproportionate to other operational costs but, furthermore, could be reduced.

In commercial properties, lights are using up between 20 and 50 per cent of the total amount of energy consumed, head of technology and delivery for the Carbon Trust Geoff Smith told the BBC.

However, this needn't be the case as in recent years the market has been flooded with energy-efficient alternatives, which consume less power and thereby could bring companies' electricity bills right down.

The US National Intelligence Council predicted in its Global Trends 2030 report that demand for food, water and energy across the world will rise by as much as 50 per cent by 2030. Therefore, arguably now is the time for businesses to think about how they can reduce the amount of power they are consuming, both in terms of their own bills but also in an effort to do the right thing by the planet - and lighting should be the first place for them to start.

Tom Delay, chief executive of the UK's Carbon Trust, warned that those who do not make moves to cut back their power usage could be "sleepwalking into a resource crunch".

Many of the energy solutions adopted the world over are born from resources which are not sustainable and therefore will invariably run out at some point in the future. Relying on these to provide energy for business operations is therefore irresponsible and untenable.

The cost of rethinking the amount of power consumed - and more importantly the way that it is used and where the energy comes from - does not need to be an overly expensive or time-costly process.

For companies that do wish to make a more substantial investment in their ecological prowess, even the cost of installing photovoltaic solar panels costs half what it did three years ago.

However, for those who wish to cut their usage with a smaller capital outlay, prices for energy-efficient lighting solutions continue to boast competitive rates.

Ultimately, businesses operating with older lighting solutions are wasting their own money - and with the economy in its current state, it is doubtful that many can afford to be doing so. Merely installing a few new ceiling light fittings to replace outdated versions could make all the difference.
