The NC5 Plus Is Easier to Use and More Intuitive Than The Previous NC5

Injection press maker Sumitomo (SHI) Demag Plastics Machinery GmbH used the Fakuma show to roll out its NC5 plus controller and the largest size yet of its Systec hydraulic press. Sumitomo Demag officials said the NC5 plus is easier to use and more intuitive than the previous NC5. It also has more functions, such as activeKeys, where the user can store up to five screens where they work most frequently, on a quick-access toolbar. The user can quickly access every screen with just two clicks. A simple search function replaces the previous need to call up screen lists and scrolling through them to find the desired screen. Another new function of the improved controller is called activeAdjust. The operator uses a slider to increase or reduce the dynamics of the mold movement for the individual application, without external help. The activeAdjust also works with any machine movement, such as ejectors and the changeover from injection pressure to pack and hold. Other activeKeys include activeQ+ that ensures controlled mold opening, activeEcon for monitoring energy efficiency) and activeRemote that allows remove monitoring. Sumitomo Demag also announced a Systec press with 2, 000 metric tons of clamping force. The Systec range now runs from 35 tonnes to 2, 000 tonnes. Systec injection presses use a fully hydraulic clamping unit on the smaller sizes, from 35-120 tonnes. Machines from 130 tonnes to 2, 000 tonnes use a toggle clamp. At the Fakuma show, held Oct. 18-22 in Friedrichshafen, Sumitomo Demag molded polycarbonate light guides for appliances on a 50-ton Systec. A 160-tonne Systec multi with a double-turntable mold made two-component light guides to illuminate the gearshift pattern of a selector lever in a car. The company also demonstrated in-mold labeling on a 200-tonne EL-Exis SP machine with hybrid drive. Also at Fakuma, a 100-tonne IntElect Smart all-electric press molded electrical connector housings from glass-filled polybutylene terephthalate. One out of every five all-electric presses sold in Europe comes from Sumitomo Demag’s plant in Wiehe, Germany, said CEO Tetsuya Okamura. Sumitomo Demag was formed in 2008 when Japan-based Sumitomo Heavy Industries Ltd., bought Demag Ergotech GmbH and Van Dorn Demag Corp. Now the company intends to create a joint Japanese-German platform for the all-electric IntElect and SE machines. “We will develop basic components such as drives, injection units and controls on a global basis, ” said Shaun Dean, chief operating officer.
