A one-off luxury supercar called the Icona Vulcano will be unveiled at this month’s Shanghai auto show.
Designed by Shanghai-based company Icona – created in 2010 – the two-door, two-seat Icona Vulcano is powered by an electrically-boosted front-mounted V12 engine with a combined output of 670kW.
Developed by former Ferrari powertrain technical director and Formula One engineer Claudio Lombardi, Icona claims the poweplant will provide enough motivation to see the Vulcano accelerate from 0-200km/h in less than 10 seconds and hit a top speed of around 350km/h. Ferrari’s latest electric motor-equipped supercar, the 588kW LaFerrari, is claimed to reach the 200km/h mark in under seven seconds and exceed 350km/h.
Due to be revealed in a ‘Red Magma’ paint finish, said to be “evanescent when lit up, almost black in the absence of light,” the company’s French design director Samuel Chuffart – previously employed by Nissan and Jaguar Land Rover – says the Icona Vulcano brings together different skills and expertise of a very Italian tradition.
“As different ideas came together, the most challenging design issue which we faced was how to create a balance between power and beauty.
“The way we found the right balance was usually by looking for the greatest simplicity,” Chuffart said.
The company says the Icona Vulcano is an evolution of the design language first seen on the Icona Fuselage concept shown at the 2011 Shanghai event.
The 2013 Shanghai auto show begins on April 20.
