Australian State of New South Wales to Invest in Mining and Gas Industries

The government of the Australian state of New South Wales will invest A$50 million ($47 million) in the state's mining and gas industries -- mainly to ensure legal compliance -- NSW resources and energy minister Anthony Roberts said Tuesday.

"The NSW government will invest A$30 million in compliance and information to ensure best practice standards in our mining and gas industries," Roberts said in a statement, without specifying a timeframe.

Another A$15 million will be invested on geoscience activities.

"This initiative provides a co-contribution of up to A$200,000 for an individual project with NSW explorers. The pre-exploration data collection initiative will attract new exploration and investment to the state in new frontiers," he said.

In addition, A$4 million will be spent rehabilitating derelict mines and protecting nearby communities, Roberts said.
